Nous achetons une maison!!! (We are buying a house!!!)
Back at the start of our house hunt, in June, I wrote about the house #6 in my blog entry. We really liked it, but felt somehow that we couldn't just go and buy something when we wanted to really take our time to figure out which region of France to live in. It turns out that although we like the area near Saint Arnac, we feel there is not enough going on for us to want to live here. The summer is active in the villages, but once September hits, things slow down and you are driving 45 minutes or more to find something to do. Our house is in the Charente. There is a larger expat community there than here, and although we want to integrate with the French, it is so nice to just sit and "have a chat" in your own language sometimes. You can also get more for your money depending on the area. The Charente has great summer weather, but the housing prices are lower than other areas. The house is south of Poitiers, west of Limoges, and north of Angoulême, so we have a choice of several cities for day trips. Bordeaux is 2 hours to the Southwest.
I wrote about our house in our latest newsletter, which was sent out on Monday, November 2nd. If you did not receive it, please add your email to our list (on our website or Facebook page there is a sign up). The great thing is that the main house is move-in ready. So many of the houses in our budget needed a lot of work and we would have to find another place to live to renovate the house.
Keith will be renovating the barns starting in February. (we hope!) One barn will be the accommodation and the other barn will be Keith's bread kitchen where he will teach baking courses. We are fortunate that his friend is a builder and lives South of Toulouse--he will come up and oversee all the work that needs to be done.
We started the process in early September, and we didn't tell anyone except close family until recently. Then it was getting harder and harder to keep a secret…so now it's out there! We put down the deposit and it just went through last week, so we could be in our new house by December 15th or sooner!
More to come soon, I can't wait to have internet ALL THE TIME again!
